Ladies, this one is for you.
It’s commonly repeated that women make up the largest percentage of wine buyers in the US. An August 2003 article in Wines & Vines shows the most recent numbers I could find:
According to a study conducted by Merrill Research & Associates for
the Wine Market Council, women accounted for 55% of core and marginal
wine drinkers in 1994. (Core wine drinkers are defined as those who
drink wine weekly or more often, while marginal drinkers consume wine
at least once every two or three months). By 2000 the percentage
climbed to 62% of core wine drinkers and 64% of marginal wine drinkers.
The organization is currently finishing up another study, which they
predict will show an even higher percentage of women wine drinkers.
Yet, so many women are still intimidated by wine, sticking with what
they know. One of the things I try to do with this blog is make wine
more approachable and fun for my readers and for me. I’m not the only
one.

The Wine Divas club at the Polo Grille is a great way to learn more about wine in a relaxed and fun environment. The Polo Grille, located in Mason, is now taking reservations for the popular 3-class session. The classes are held on three Mondays and cover Basic Whites, Basic Reds, and Old World v New World. You can attend one or attend all three.
The classes are taught by Laura Myers-Landoll from Vintage Wines and Mary Horn from the Lions Group. If you pay attention to my Friday listings, you’ll note that both companies are well-represented at the Friday tastings around Cincinnati. Combined, Laura and Mary bring over 25 years of wine experience – and enthusiasm – to their instruction. Each of the three sessions includes expert instruction, wine sampling,
appetizers and other perks, such as state minimum pricing on featured wine,
discounts at the Polo Grille, and invites to special events.
A recent article in the Enquirer interviewed several previous attendees. One club member, Roberta Dorger, had this to say about the group:
…"a really good girls night out. I signed up with a group
of friends, but I also made new ones in the group. Knowing what I know
now, I’d feel completely comfortable signing up and going alone."
I’ll be going alone for at least one class. Maybe I’ll see you there!
