Those de Cavels keep interrupting my blogging time off with interesting press releases. This time, I was surprised to learn that the rather critically acclaimed Pho Paris is becoming a comfort food, affordable restaurant called Chalk Food + Wine, with a focus on the wine. I look forward to the wine dinners and such they’ll be having. It’s worth noting, for me at least, that they re-open on January 15 (the day after my birthday!).
On a similar note, although not related to the de Cavels, One Restaurant and Lounge in Mason is closing. They’ve been hurt because of the construction and "revitalization" of downtown Mason’s Main Street. On the up side, they hope to re-open later in another location. Of course, we heard that about the Maisonette too, if I recall correctly. Anyway, their last night, like that of Pho Paris, is New Year’s Eve.
The full press release for Chalk’s opening (and the closing of Pho Paris) is after the jump.
Pho Paris to become Chalk Food + Wine
Covington, KY – Jean-Robert’s Group welcomes a new food destination on Greenup Street. Pho Paris will close after New Year’s Eve and is planning to reopen to the public on Tuesday, January 15th as Chalk Food + Wine.
Chalks’ menu will be based on our approach to comfort food, with a whimsical touch. “I wanted something a bit more casual and approachable for the guests. I believe this concept will satisfy everyone’s expectations,” de Cavel said. This new venture is a strong collaboration with our existing team, Chef Jared Whalen and his kitchen brigade, Pastry Chef Summer Genetti, Manager/Sommelier Bryant Phillips and his front of the house staff, which have made Pho Paris’s reputation as one of the best destination restaurants in Cincinnati.
Chalk Food:
The food approach will be keeping our philosophy of the group, using the best fresh ingredients from the season and trying to use local products as much as possible, making everything from scratch. The menu will feature Starters (selection for cold and hot appetizers) from $5-11, Hand Food (sandwiches) and Eat Us (selection of main entrée) from $6.5 to $28, Friends (side dishes) from $5-7 and Sweets (selection of desserts) from $5-8.
Chalk Wine:
The wine approach will be a huge part of Chalk. The front side room will be turned into a wine room – cellar style with a selection of international wines concentrating on small production/artisanal wines at retail pricing for every budget, for take-out or to be consumed in the restaurant with a minimal corkage fee. The wine list in the dining room will focus on intense selection of glass pours. The wine room will also be available for wine tastings as well as to be booked as a private room for up to 16 people. The Chalk team will work on wine dinners and pairings to please everyone.
The new look of 318 Greenup Street will have a feel of a neighborhood eclectic, whimsical place where people can gather anytime of the week to share some wonderful dishes or experience an interesting selection of wine. Chalkboard will be placed in the room with some art by local artists focusing on food and wine. The feel will be very comfortable to every one. “Having such a passionate team as Jared, Summer, Bryant and their staff who care about their craft and the dedication to please the guest the best possible, I am so excited to be part of this new concept and wish our Chalk team good luck. Having our partners Martin and Marilyn Wade invested in Covington on Greenup Street, we’re so thankful to be able and pleased to bring a new food and wine destination to this neighborhood. We’re waiting to serve you, Cheers, Santé, See you in mid January” says de Cavel.

Hey, Wine Girl! I saw you listed in Cincinnati Magazine’s Jan 2008 edition — very cool!
Pigall’s is a truly outstanding restaurant, however all of J-R’s other places are quite mediocre. Jeanro Bistro is the biggest disappointment, the food is well below the bar. J-R has spread himself too thin, and he doesn’t oversee the quality at his other establishments. He’s cruising in his name. Pho was really good when it first opened, but since the move to Covington the food there really sent downhill.
What a terrible name for a place hoping to please pallets. However, I just made a reservation for me and my partner in dining.
We’re dedicated JeanRo regulars. It’s the best value in Cincinnati. Rich, I’ve had mediocre meals there, but usually only on weekends when it’s busier. If you haven’t before, dine at the Bistro Monday or Tuesday evening and the quality of the food is at its peak.
I’m sorry, but Jeanro is worse than mediocre, it’s awful and it’s no value. Yea, you get a big portion, but a big portion of poor quality, badly prepared food is no value in my book. The kitchen staff is constantly turning over, and there is absolutely no supervision from Jean-Robert in the kitchen.
This place is no Pigall’s, and it’s lousy by bistro standards. Go to Balthazaar in Manhattan or Brasserie Jo in Chicago if you want to see how a French bistro should be run. Jean Robert doesn’t oversee this restaurant, it’s just a cash cow for his backers, the Wades. Jeanro is filled with meatballs who wouldn’t know good food from bad. I’m sure that Chalk will be yet another disappointment as well. Jean-robert is aiming pretty low these days in his efforts to get a return on the Wade’s money.
Everyone in Cincinnati who’s spent a day in NYC or Paris is a gourmand.
Anyway, I dined at Chalk Friday night and posted my opinion at http://www.chadedward.us
