Back in early September I took a trip to Florida to help a friend out with some wine issues. In the process of touring wine shops, we wandered into one that happened to sell Wölffer Estate wines. I was incredibly excited, as my friend Lenn in Long Island tends to really enjoy their wines. You can’t find them in Ohio or Kentucky, so I was shocked to find these wines in Florida.
While Long Island – actually, the Hamptons – may not be local to me, Wölffer Estate is still a small production winery. I appreciate that. On Thursday night, with Kevin out of town, I popped open the 2003 Rosé. Poor Kevin. This will be gone before he gets home.
I’m all about thinking pink and I’m pretty convinced that rosé gets a bad rap. Kevin shies away from it and a lot of people assume that syrupy sweet white zinfandel is the same as a rosé. Actually, there’s a world of difference.
When I pulled the cork on the Wölffer Estate Rosé, my nose was instantly filled with the scent of roses. I hate to type that, as it seems rather trite, but it’s true. Immediately following the roses, I caught a whiff of grapefruit and other citrus.
On the palate, I was completely content. This rosé is dry, but exceedingly well balanced. There is a little bit of creaminess on the finish. I can’t find the information about the blend that when into this vintage, but I’m betting on some pinot noir and a little bit of chardonnay. The citrus carries through from the nose to the tongue, providing a refreshing and happily acidic experience.
I’m glad I grabbed this bottle when I saw it. It’s not often that I run into these wines. It definitely gets a full happy face from me.

I don’t know what the scene is out there but here in California there is a big resurgence of rose being made, but not your father’s rose! These are floral and dry. Seems that many places are making them and most in this new style for new drinkers.
