I’m not a beer connoisseur. I am, however, a gadget freak, and this is one nifty gadget. So nifty, I may need to order one for Kevin (who is a beer connoisseur).
Brütül has apparently worked long and hard to develop the Black and Tan Turtle – a turtle whose sole purpose in life is to help you pour the perfect black and tan.
For those of you who aren’t familiar, a black and tan is a perfectly balanced glass of beer, with lager, pilsner, or ale on the bottom and stout or porter on the top. Now, I don’t claim to understand exactly how this Turtle gadget works, but it definitely does work. It even has a built-in bottle opener. If you want a black and tan at home, this is the gadget to use.
In keeping with the turtle theme, the Black and Tan Turtle is sold through the Terrapin Beer Co.

It is a cute version of the classic bartender spoon. It breaks the momentum from the pour, then reduces it further by turning a single heavy stream of beer into much lighter rivulets all around the spoon (or in this case, turtle). That keeps the dark beer from plunging into the pilsner. Eventually the dark beer will always come to the top because it is actually lighter than the pilsner. The spoon method just keeps it from plunging deep, allowing the two to settle more quickly.
On a completely unrelated note, I hope you will join The 89 Project (http://89project.blogspot.com ). I sent you an invitation with the first group.
I would have loved to have had one of those when I was bartending. We used the bartender spoon mentioned above but it could (and would) always fall forward causing the two beers to mix more than they should have.
