Don’t Like Chardonnay? Try the Unoaked Kind

By: Cresta

I’ve never been a big fan of Chardonnay. But until now, I’ve not had UNOAKED Chardonnay.

Toad Hollow’s 2010 Mendocino County Chardonnay is quite good. This California Chard is crisp and fruity. At first, it smelled like peaches, but then tasted a little bit like apples and grapefruit. I thought it was the perfect sweetness and had good body.

I guess Toad Hollow was ahead of the trend of unoaked Chardonnay. Oak barrels can impart flavors that overpower the fruitiness of the grapes. So instead of fermenting and aging the wine in oak barrels, the process is done in stainless steel tanks so that the true character of the grape comes through.

So if you think you don’t like Chardonnay, try the unoaked kind. And at around $13, you can keep a couple bottles of this one on hand.

If you really want to try a non oaked one then try a french. They have the true taste of a Chardonnay. They do not over do it like the Californians do.
