<p>Out here in Napa Valley, there&#8217;s a big weekend at the end of April called the <a href="http://www.stagsleapdistrict.com/v2v.php" target="_blank">Vineyard to Vintner (V2V) Open House Weekend</a> featuring wines from the upper echelon Stag&#8217;s Leap District. V2V is out of my limited price range at the moment, but there is something in the press release that caught my eye.</p>
<p>The Stag&#8217;s Leap District Vintners are coming together to make a sangria.</p>
<p>Yeah, you heard that right. I often recommend a more low-end wine for sangria, because you&#8217;re just going to destroy it with brandy and fruit. But this time, 18 of the District’s high-end cabernet sauvignons will combine with local fruits and brandy to create &#8230; fruit punch. Really really extravagant fruit punch.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what the folks in the Stag&#8217;s Leap District have to say about their classier-than-average sangria:</p>
<p>“Everyone knows that we make some pretty remarkable wines here in the Stags Leap District, some of the best in the world,” said newly elected SLDW President, Elizabeth Vianna of Chimney Rock Winery. “What people don’t know is how much fun we have doing it.  Our V2V weekend and our ‘Swanky Sangria’ are our way of showing the world the extraordinary sum of our parts as the fortunate beneficiaries of this District’s amazing terroir and eclectic personalities.”</p>
<p>Once again, the sangria is out of my price point, but I would dearly love to try some. Considering the cost of many of the bottles involved, the estimated value of the blend is $20/oz or a staggering $100 a glass.  That better be some amazing sangria &#8230; and everyone better sip!</p>

<p>A quick post on one of our almost local breweries: <a href="http://www.schlafly.com/" target="_blank">Schlafly</a> of St. Louis. Michelle and I had the chance to stop in here on our way through Missouri and enjoyed the visit. On tap were two cask conditioned alternate versions of the 80/- (80 Schilling) and the Golden Ale.</p>

<p>I sat down with the cask conditioned 80 schilling. Cask conditioning allows a secondary fermentation to occur within the storage container. In this case it added an extra layer of smokiness that I usually don&#8217;t find in the normal Schlafly offering. AbV was in line at 4.7 to create a very enjoyable drink.</p>
<p>I also tried a small sample of the Pumpkin Ale from draft and found a pumpkin-pie flavor along with a very noticeable sweetness. This was pumpkin pie filling with a touch of whipped cream. The 8% alcohol was not apparent.</p>
<p>The food was also impressive. I had a pulled pork sandwich along with a side of the Beer Cheese soup. Michelle had a ham and egg sandwich. We could have easily split either entree between the two of us. The portions were generous and the food itself was well prepared and matched the beer.</p>

<p>Overall, I would give a <img src='http://www.wine-girl.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' />  to the Schlafly brewery experience. We did not have time to take the tour at the Bottleworks location, but if any readers have been on that tour, let us know in the comments. For anyone visiting the St. Louis area, I recommend a quick stop by the brewery to split a meal and try something from their large selection.</p>

I think we tried every beer available at the various booths, particularly Germany&#8217;s biergarten and the special 15 Beers for 15 Years booth. At both booths, you could order beer flights, so trying every beer (in a much smaller pour)  probably isn&#8217;t as much of an accomplishment as it sounds. <p style="text-align: left;">We kicked off our Epcot Food &amp; Wine Festival adventures with a special wine tasting given by <a href="http://www.achaval-ferrer.com/" target="_blank">Achaval Ferrer Winery</a> of Mendoza, Argentina.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Achaval Ferrer produces low-yield wines, consistently rated in the 90+ in both Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. They produce around 15,000 cases per year, 85% of which is exported (25% of that to the U.S.). The winery was launched 10 years ago by 5 friends and they purchased land near the Andes mountains with vines that average around 80 years old.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The winemaker takes an interesting tactic, spending more time with the wood in the barrels and in the field than worrying about the actual blends. In fact, the wine ferments in extremely warm temperatures in concrete vats for 5-6 days &#8211; other wineries take months, not days, before moving to the barrel.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">We tried three wines at this tasting. Prices listed are what I call &#8220;Disney prices,&#8221; so in many cases you&#8217;ll want to drop $5-$10 from the cost of the bottle.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>2009 Malbec Mendoza</strong> ($29.95):  The winery specializes in Malbec. This one has a lot of big fruit on the nose, as well as violets. There are also a lot of big fruits up front on the palette. I found this wine to be a little hot, and the presenters mentioned that while it is drinkable now, it is a little young. Lay it down for at least a year, I think, and some of that alcohol hotness will burn off (14.5% abv). <p style="text-align: left;"><strong>2008 Quimera</strong> ($54.95): This blend is named for the mythical beast Chimera, which is a blend of different animals. This wine includes 40% malbec, 22% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, and 4% petit verdot. Interestingly, the winemaker chose to blend this wine right after picking &#8211; no fermenting first. The petit verdot and the cabernet sauvignon lended a lot of structure to this wine, as well as a long finish. The middle of the palate though was all malbec. This wasn&#8217;t my kind of wine &#8211; the fruit was just too big and I still felt like it was a little too hot for me. But if you love the big fruit monsters, you&#8217;ll enjoy the Quimera. <p style="text-align: left;"><strong>2007 Finca Mirador</strong> ($142.95): The Finca Mirador is one of three separate single vineyard wines produced by Achaval Ferrer. Each one of these showcases malbec from a specific elevation, really emphasizing altitude, terroir, and soil. The Finca Mirador Malbec is grown at 2400 feet, and the other two single vineyard wines are grown at even higher elevations. This wine is pricey, but it tastes like it. I loved it. There was a lot of &#8220;dirt&#8221; in this wine, with dried cherries and dried fruits.  There was a lot of complexity and structure to this wine, reminding me of a really wonderful bordeaux. <p style="text-align: left;">Ahead of the Disney Epcot Food and Wine festival, Michelle and I stopped for dinner at <a href="http://portobellorestaurant.com/" target="_blank">Portobello</a> in Downtown Disney. The past few years, we&#8217;ve kicked off our trip with Irish pub Raglan Road, but we decided to switch things up a little.</p>
<p>Eating at the bar allows for a choice of 4 different speciality meatballs. The beef, pork, or chicken meatballs are 1.95 each add a dollar for the salmon. You can also get a selection of 3 for 5.00 (6.00 if you pick salmon). Each type of meat is paired with a single spice to drive the pairing: Chicken with Sage, Salmon with Tarragon. My favorites were the spicy pork and beef meatballs, while Michelle enjoyed the chicken.</p>

<p>I was also able to try two beers from <a href="http://www.orlandobrewing.com/index2." target="_blank">Orlando Brewing</a> which is an organic brewery located not surprisingly in Orlando. I started with the EPA (English Pale Ale) which had a fantasic amount of malt to help balance the hops. There was almost a caramel flavor at the end right before the bitterness came in. It was a nice and round flavored beer that went really well with the Spicy Pork and Beef meatballs. The sage and the hops didn&#8217;t match as well.</p>

<p>For dessert, I tried a bottle of the Blackwater Porter, also from Orlando Brewing. Nice rich coffe flavor and a deeper color than I expected in a porter. The flavor was nice and paired well with one of the signature desserts, the Beerimisu. Michelle ordered this in order to keep her streak of trying Tiramisu deserts as often as possible.</p>
<p>Instead of an expresso, they added the same porter that I tried in order to get the roasted coffee flavor. It was a great switch that had us wondering if we could switch our tiramisu recipe at home to use a stout or porter. Nice and creamy with the light hint of coffee that Michelle prefers.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>No, not me. I&#8217;m staying right here in Cincinnati, with an occasional jaunt elsewhere. But we are losing one of my favorite sommeliers in the area.</p>
<p>Bretton Lammi, sommelier at <a href="http://www.eddiemerlots.com/" target="_blank">Eddie Merlot&#8217;s</a>, is heading to Las Vegas at the end of the month. Bretton is amazingly knowledgeable about wine and I just know he&#8217;ll be fabulous as the Head Sommelier at the new <a href="http://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/" target="_blank">Cosmopolitan Hotel</a> on the Strip in Las Vegas. The Cosmopolitan opens on December 15, so Bretton is busy packing up his life right now to transport it across the country. But he&#8217;ll still be at Eddie Merlot&#8217;s until October 22, so go sample their great wine list while he&#8217;s still in town.</p>
<p>Bretton will be busy at The Cosmopolitan. It looks like the hotel-casino will be home to 12 restaurants, of which one is D.O.C.G., a wine bar focusing on Italian cuisine and wines. There are also four bars and lounges in The Cosmopolitan, two of which really appeal to me. The Chandelier apparently has three different bars within its borders, each with a slightly different (yet classy) theme, and Vesper is apparently a place for vintage cocktails. Yum. Those are just the named bars. Being a Vegas casino, I can only assume that there are a multitude of smaller bar locations spread across the casino floor.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m heading to Las Vegas in January for CES. <ul>
<li>In addition to <a href="http://www.wine-girl.net/2010/08/eat-drink-laugh-local-farmers-fair-and-brew-ha-ha.html" target="_self">Farmers&#8217; Fair and Brew-Ha-Ha</a>, you can stay in the suburbs and eat and drink this weekend as well. The 25th Annual <a href="http://blueashevents.com/tasteofblueash_schedule.html#food" target="_blank">Taste of Blue Ash</a> is happening tonight through Sunday. I&#8217;m highly amused &#8211; both Night Ranger (Sister Christian) and the Guess Who will be there on Saturday night. In addition to the food and 80s rock, there&#8217;s a last minute add-on to the vendor list: <strong>The Ohio Valley Wine Garden</strong>. This pavilion will feature wines from Burnet Ridge, Harmony Hill, and Henke! Prices are $1 to sample and $5 per glass.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.eatlocalcincy.com/" target="_blank">Restaurant Week</a> is coming up, so mark your calendars. As opposed to the recently held Downtown Restaurant Week, this is the Greater Cincinnati Independents Restaurant Week. Go support the little guy! Restaurant Week is September 13-19, 2010. More information, including participating restaurants, can be found <a href="http://www.eatlocalcincy.com/" target="_blank">on their web site</a>.</li>
<li>Smack dab in the middle of Restaurant Week is Beer Fest. Let&#8217;s just consider this a run-up to Oktoberfest, shall we? The Hoperatives <a href="http://www.hoperatives.com/?p=5492" target="_blank">have more information</a>, but basically, Beer Fest has moved to Fountain Square. Kevin and I volunteered to help pour in a booth, so we&#8217;ll see if that pans out. Dates for Beer Fest are Friday, September 10 through Sunday, September 12.</li>
<li>Finally, remember <a href="http://www.wine-girl.net/2010/08/disneys-epcot-food-wine-festival-2010.html">that Disney post</a> I wrote? Well, we did end up registering for Party of the Senses. If you are inspired to go to Disney during the Wine &amp; Food Festival, registration is open for the culinary and beverage seminars. They seem to be running between $8 and $12 this year. We registered for an Argentinian wine tasting, a Spanish wine tasting, and Scotch tasting. You can register for the seminars at <a href="http://www.disneyurl.com/foodandwinedemos" target="_blank">http://www.disneyurl.com/foodandwinedemos</a>. Spots fill up fast. Last year we didn&#8217;t know you could register online ahead of time and many of the seminars we wanted were already sold out.</li>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Back in 2005, I went to a Learning-themed conference (as I&#8217;m a training &amp; development professional) held at a convention center on the Walt Disney World property. I was excited to begin with, as I&#8217;m quite the Disney aficionado. Kevin flew down with me and we spent an extended weekend after the conference exploring the Epcot Food &amp; Wine Festival. We loved it! At the time, the F&amp;W offered a bunch of free seminars with park admission, which is how we discovered super-cool Master Sommelier /Master of Wine Doug Frost and were introduced to Greek wine.</p>

<p>Since then, we&#8217;ve been back in 2006 and 2009, and we <em>just made our reservations</em> for 2010. We really do enjoy it and for those of you who are kid-free like us, well, let&#8217;s just say that Epcot is filled with more adults than kids during F&amp;W Fest weekends. The F&amp;W Fest has changed a bit since 2005, but a lot of the great things have stayed the same.</p>
<p>Every country in the World Pavilion has its own special booth setup where you can get tapas size bites from that region, as well as a beer or wine. For instance, France usually has some sort of eclair, a quiche, and champagne. (This is aside from the specific Champagne booth that is set up.) In addition to the regular countries, booths are added for new countries so that you can have food from Australia, Spain, Belgium, India, and more. It tends to grow and change every year. Australia also has a special wine walk in which you can participate for a small fee. America usually offers an included Samuel Adams beer tasting that is a lot of fun.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s also a Festival headquarters, where you can partake in those seminars I mentioned. These now cost ~$8 per person. Last year we took a class from a rum maker from Bacardi and listened to a winemaker from a small winery speak. I haven&#8217;t yet looked at this year&#8217;s list of seminars, but it is <a href="http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/epcot/special-events/epcot-international-food-and-wine-festival/" target="_blank">available</a> for download. You can also sign up for special dinners, parties and tastings. These, of course, have a much higher fee and generally require registration several months in advance. In fact, on July 20, they announced all of the special events and opened the registration lines. Last year we enjoyed a Tequila tasting in the new Tequila bar in Mexico. This year we&#8217;re participating in a Grand Marnier Tasting and Cocktail event in France. Cost? $45 per person.</p>

<p>In 2006 we participated in two expensive but amazing events. We took a day-long class with Doug Frost that introduced us to Spanish wine. It was amazing, and I learned a lot &#8211; in fact, since that class I&#8217;ve had a real passion for Spanish wines. (Thank you Doug!) We also went to the Party of the Senses. At the time, I think it cost $110/pp (and is now up to $135/pp). It was worth it. I had mixed emotions about it at the time. Due to a combination of my nut allergy and my pickiness, there wasn&#8217;t all that much I would eat. There was an amazing amount of excellent wine though. The Party of the Senses is a giant room, decorated so beautifully it&#8217;s almost over-stimulating, filled with various chefs, sous chefs, and their food. All of the food is paired with wine as well, so you get to try things you wouldn&#8217;t find either out in the park or here at home. Adding to all of this is Cirque du Soleil, who perform periodically in the great room, but also offer face painting and juggling off to the side. I haven&#8217;t made up my mind on the Party of the Senses this year. It&#8217;s a big expense for two people, but it&#8217;s also incredibly memorable.</p>

<p>Last year we discovered the best way to control your spending during the F&amp;W festival. You can buy the equivalent of Gift Cards, branded with the F&amp;W Festival, at the F&amp;W Fest headquarters. Just grab one of those and fill it up with cash at the beginning of each day. It&#8217;s easier than dealing with cash as you hit each food booth and does give you a bit of a budget. Just be careful. They give you a wristband to which you can attach the card. Last year, my card fell off the band. I&#8217;m going to probably use a lanyard of some sort this year.</p>
<p>Last year, Friday was a great day at Epcot, without a lot of people until evening. Saturday was packed and we flew out Sunday. As far as we can tell, locals actually come to Epcot during the F&amp;W Festival, as there is some sort of special F&amp;W Fest pass you can get if you live in the area. And why not? What a great chance to try a lot of different food, wine, and beer? For us, staying on park property is the best bet. We can drink and eat as much as we want and rely 100% on Disney&#8217;s excellent transportation system to get us from the park to our hotel &#8211; no driving necessary.</p>
<p>The Epcot wine and food festival runs daily from Oct 1 &#8211; Nov 14. On our first night in the city, we met up with some old friends from Cincinnati and headed over to Elysian Brewing Company in Capitol Hill. Elysian also has a brewpub down by the stadiums, fittingly called Elysian Fields.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.elysianbrewing.com/" target="_blank">Elysian  Brewing Company</a> &#8211; A short bus ride from our hotel up to Capitol Hill  from our hotel was our first stop in Seattle. We had a great dinner  with friends and were able to try through a brewmaster&#8217;s sampler.  Michelle found the Dry Wit (a &#8220;guest beer&#8221; from Pike Brewing) a better fit for her  tastes than the current offerings.</p>

<p>I was able to try:</p>

<li><a href="http://www.elysianbrewing.com/beer/dragonstooth.html">Dragonstooth   Stout</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.elysianbrewing.com/beer/mensroom.html">Men&#8217;s Room   Original Red</a> &#8211; This was probably my favorite of the bunch as I ordered another glass once the sampler was finished. The hops were present, but there was a spiciness that helped to alleviate the bitterness. Very well balanced</li>
<li><a href="http://www.elysianbrewing.com/beer/specialty.html">Dry-Hopped    IPA -</a> For the hop lovers out there. This has the bitterness up front, the tropical in the middle and a very long finish. Not much other depth, but the went for hops and that is exactly what was there.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.elysianbrewing.com/beer/loser.html">Loser Pale Ale</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.elysianbrewing.com/beer/bifrost.html">Bifrost</a></li>
</ul>
<p>My notes are definitely incomplete as it was more of a night out with friends, but my overall impression was that Elysian enjoys using hops in varied and creative ways. If hops are your thing, you will not be disappointed by their beers.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.pikebrewing.com/" target="_self">The Pike Brewing  Company</a> &#8211; We stopped for a small lunch here on our last day in Seattle. I had a nice little  cheese plate and Michelle had a gigantic bowl of macaroni and cheese that used Washington cheeses.</p>

<ul>
<li>Naughty Nellie (Golden Ale) &#8211; Strong wheat characteristics with a  very nice hop presence.</li>
<li>Pale Ale &#8211; A basic entry and would be nice as an alternate to  traditional macro-brewery offerings</li>
<li>IPA &#8211; A bright orange flavor leads into deceptively smooth hops.  Multiple flavors add a few extra dimensions that I did not expect on an  IPA. Michelle commented that she could drink a glass of this which is a  very high complement.</li>
<li>Kilt Lifter (Scotch Ale) &#8211; Deep, rich flavors. A nice hint of smoke  underneath the malt driven flavor. Michelle wanted food to go with this,  but still enjoyed it.</li>
<li>Tandem (Double Ale) &#8211; Very sweet and sugary. Well balanced between  the sweet of the candy sugar and the Belgian yeast used.</li>
<li>XXXXX (Extra Stout) &#8211; Our first split opinion of the tasting. I  liked the strong malt flavor and the slight bitterness, Michelle not as  much.</li>
<li>Monk&#8217;s Uncle (Abbey Style) &#8211; Light and crisp with honey flavors.  Michelle was slightly confused by the combination of flavors.</li>
<li>Dry Wit (Summer Wheat Seasonal) &#8211; Floral up front with a nice grainy  finish spells the perfect beer for Michelle. Hints of lavender,  coriander and orange peel all of which were used in during the brewing  process.</li>
</ul>

<p>The six tastes (4-oz pours) rang up at a reasonable $9.00.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.pyramidbrew.com/" target="_blank">Pyramid Breweries</a> &#8211; This was our last stop on the way out to the airport to catch a redeye home. One of the oddest experiences that I had on this trip occurred while we were working through a sampling at the bar. The gentleman  who sat down next to me also had on an <em>Irish Kevin&#8217;s</em> shirt from Key  West, FL &#8211; and we were both on the opposite end of the country from the original bar. It was weird, but I was able to continue tasting though Michelle&#8217;s  laughter.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a quick run down on the beers I tried:</p>
<ul>
<li>Imperial Hefeweisen &#8211; Nice creaminess with a slight bitterness on top of the expected banana and clove.</li>
<li>Drought Pale Ale &#8211; Nitrogen injected version of the pale ale. The bubbles seem a little more present in this version and there is a nice sweetness. One of the special brewery only releases.</li>
<li>Snow Cap &#8211; Winter Seasonal amber that was brewed with caramel and wintergreen. Very nice and surprising. I was glad they still had this on an unmarked tap as it was my favorite of the tasting.</li>
<li>Lipstinger &#8211; Farmhouse ale brewed with peppercorns. Banana and pepper flavors instead of clove. Michelle enjoyed this more than she expected as the peppercorn was very well integrated. We left with a pair of bottles.</li>
<li>Dark IPA &#8211; This tasted like a chocolate covered hop. Very strange and not exactly my type of beer. I would recommend it to any hop heads out there, but be ready for a beer that defies expectations.</li>

<p>The sampler was a deal at $5.00 for the 5 2-ox pours.</p>
<p>We ended up buying two bottles of the Lipstinger, as the saison style  blended well with the pepper. A very distinctive beer that was a hit  for both Michelle and myself.</p>
<p>Did I miss anything that I should have tried? There were a bunch of  great looking breweries, but only so much time.</p>
